The only way to really check an expansion valve is by reading the high and low side pressures. Normally if an expansion valve is bad, it will actually pull the low side into a vacuum. Common practice when replacing a compressor is to also change the drier and the expansion device. Luckily for you, the removal of the evaporator case, which houses the expansion valve, is not that bad. It is feasable that if the compressor was bad, that ir could have sent debris through the system causing restrictions in certain components. Flush ALL the lines, evaporator and condenser, then install the new parts listed above. Also ensure that the proper amount of oil is reinstalled in the system as the fushing will remove it. Good luck

When the compressor was replaced moisture got into the system, evacuate system, replace drier and recharge should fix.The moisture goes thru the tx valve and freezes up the nozzle stopping the cycle then thaws again and cycle starts again till the moisture goes around and freezes again.
