Somehow, this question ended up in the politics forum - and, I strangely find that refreshing.

I assume you're talking about loud speakers?
The duel cone is really redundant if you know what the impedance you want is (4 / 6 / 8 / etc ohms).

Take for example a 4 or 8 ohm duel voice coil speaker. If you hook it up for 8 ohms, you are utilizing the whole voice coil. If you hook it up for 4 ohms, you are using approximately half of the voice coil - and the other half is just taking up space.

I've always thought this was just a ploy so the manufacturers could produce fewer different speakers and still cover all the bases.
