There's not one scintella of evidence of a pre-ordained plan. What makes a person stand out anyway?
Greatness may last a thousand years for a few and eternally for none. On the scale of earthly time, individual lives are but mere blinks of an eye. We're born, we live, we die and then you're not heard from ever again. There might be a tombstone or family tree made with your name on it, but eventually the tombstone weathers from age and who knows what media your family tree will be used. All the memories and accomplishments will be totally forgotten, unless you're a Hitler or Alexander the Great type person.
In a thousand years, your bones will be dust and no other trace of your existence will be seen, unless, of course you become fossilized for some reason, but even then, after thousands of years more, that will be disintegrated into dust. We influence the lives of our children and others, but they too will eventually die. So what's the point of living?
In astronomical terms, the Earth will eventually succumb to the supernova of our Sun, it's an astonomically certainty the earth will be burned to a crisp.
So does death render our lives meaningless. If we were immortal, that would be the ultimate in boredom, repetition, day after day, of doing the same thing for thousands of years (hundreds may be OK, but nothing beyond that)....but i digress, back to your question.
It all boils down to how creative we can be in the short period of time we have on this earth....Our activities need to be worthwhile for their own sake, not because they fulfill some supernatural transcendental purpose....LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST DAMNIT, YOU WON'T GET A SECOND CHANCE!!!

When we are born we come with our destiny. The simplest normal occurrence is adoption. A child is born and its parents cannot afford his higher education so he remains a less qualified person. Where as a child left as an orphan in an orphanage is picked up by rich couple who provide him with all facilities and education. Some other child which never gets picked up Grows up in the orphanage itself getting whatever is provided there. The destiny of these three children takes them in different directions.
So are we carried by destiny in different directions. Each person has his free will also. By free will we can modify the destiny but cannot change it. It is by destiny you buy a house .but you can always improve it by your freewill. In this the location of the house, type of the house, and cost of the house are predestined.
improvement etc are free will executions.

I knew you were going to ask me that ....
Seriously, the plan is there, but how the plan unfolds is up to the individuals involved. They have room to express their creativity ... or irresponsibility.
The theological ideas that everything is predestined was to combat science saying that man can decide his own fate. That theology quoted mostly from the book of Romans who also focused on man's ability - so St Paul went to the other extreme, confusing Calvin and his students.
God wants us to do the right thing and follow our conscience. If we fail, he has a plan B for the next generation, or the one after that ...
It has been a lot of generations now, and He is still waiting for us to be less selfish

Future being uncertain, no one can be sure either way as to whether destiny is pre-planned or not.
But I am sure of one thing. A belief in a pre-planned destiny helps in ensuring some peace of mind.

I used to have a lot of conflict with this question and I have come to a finality that satisfies me. I beleive that at every moment our future is written but, the very next moment, by a choice you made, it is altered, or not. So, your future is always written, but it is in constant re-write. Your choices dictate what your future will be. You dig?

Destiny precludes free will. I believe in free will. I can't believe we are here only to be puppets for the concept of destiny.

I think we have free will. Our actions affect the future and future only.
