Good question

The answer is none of the above.

What you need to do is shake things up and change them.

What you are describing is a perceived impass.

I say it is an illusion, so; treat it as one, and start over.

Change it.

Agreeing to disagree only isolates yourself from others. It doesn't do anything about the situation.

Debating the same ol'same ol' mires you down in the bureaucracy of the system. Again, the situation stays unchanged.

Whart you need to do is shake things up. Agrre to disagree but don't agree to move on or endlessly debate the issue. Set a time limit for discussion and a simple majority for aproval and change things.

With a two thirds majority you could through out the Constitution if you so desired and start all over. This is hardly ever spoken of but it is a possibility. You need two thirds of Congress to make an ammendment of strike some thing down and there is nothing to say you couldn't throw the whole thing out at once.

Throw out the Supreme Court if it seems to interfere with getting laws passed. Throw out the two thirds majority if it makes it too hard to make a decision. Throw out all the built in discriminations that had to be corrected and oversights that had to be spelled out later. Throw out everything objectioanable and rewrite the document to fit the country's current beliefs.

This is what is meant by "form(ing) a more perfect union". The same spirit in the Preamble to the Constitution that launched the document can in fact stop it, bringing it to a screaching halt and allowing the country to call for a do-over.

The Civil War was not only a call for the end to slavery but also a call for a do-over, a states rights versus sovereign rights debate over how this document should be interpreted and the sovereign rights apparently won out, or so it seems. Nothing was put in writing to state this, but defacto; that is the way the country has interpreted the war's outcome. Just think about the pledge of allegience and the phrase "one nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all" and you can see that the country sees it that way.

Should we decide to say chuck it all and start over, don't be surprised if a war is a side effect of the decision, but don't be confused as to that being the intention of saying lets start over. If you get a chance to rent it , watch "A Man For All Seasons" and listen to the discourse by Thomas Moore's character about "the winds that would blow" if laws were suddenly done away with. It is not to say that there is no need for change in society but change leaves one unprotected from the destructive natures of men. In other words, the change should be spelled out before the old system is thrown out. The best time to look for a job is when you already have one and the best time to plan a change is when things are working as best tey can be.

At any rate, you answer was none of the above.

Getting to what you were told in your class:
********************************************************************************************************************************************

On the so called marriage penalty that is a perceived effect caused by the fact that the two incomes combined create a higher taxable income and since tax rates are progressive you pay more the more you make as a couple but for those who argue this all they have to do is seperate the incomes and prepare two returns taking into account the lost deductions and what ends up happening in almost every case is that one spouse wind up getting more while the other spouse ends up getting less and when the two are averaged the couple ends up worse off than if they filed jointly. The tax system is designed in a judaeo-christian manner to encourage marriage by creating incentives to get married and stay that way. Believe me, anybody who considers it a penalty doesn't know how to make the tax system work for them. They probably rent a dwelling, take all their exemptions on their W4, don't itemize, have no idea what a tax credit is and live in a state where property taxes are almost punitive in their construction. Take a class in personal tax preparation as an elective if you like. They teach it in the accounting programs at all colleges and universities. They will tell you that filing married can always save you money all other things being equal. I studied under a retired IRS lawyer/ professor who stressed theory first and foremost. I even have my own copy of the tax codes for reference should I need it. That is what I meant when I said this was something that I definitely know. In my spare time I help others with their taxes as well.

That's an interesting question.

I enjoy reading the questions in the political forum - but at times, it seems like a soap opera. You miss several episodes and tune it back in after a week or so and you find out you haven't missed a thing.

The same questions seem to keep popping up - Is 911 a government cover up? Is Bush the worst president ever? Are democrats (or republicans, depending on the person asking the question) the dumbest people in the world? And a bazillion questions relating to Bush "lies."

I vote to move on - there's enough new material happening every day to make rehashing old news kind of lame.

The answer lies in the importance of the debate to each of you personally.

America is facing some weighty and important issues, and the thoughts and opionions of all Americans should weigh in the conversation.

Just try to remail calm, speak rationally, quote facts, and when things get to heated, agree to move on to something else for a set period of time. Calm down then try again.

Dems stick up for dems and republicans for republicans but politicians are a bunch of power hungry, self-centered egomaniacs who seek office to fill their own pockets. Get a clue people and stop the hate and useless fighting!

this is interesting... because there is of course the daily talk... but overall... if you look at it... who's not moving on?

the Republicans campaign on the same issues that will won't be be solved anytime soon, but they know this and still make it their priorities... abortion, gay marriage, welfare spending, flag burning and immigration... little has been done on these issues overall in the past 20 years, yet every election it's the same old song and dance...

It is all up to you. And, for me it depends on the subject matter. I will not run around in circles with someone that I view as utterly ridiculous.

Stay and fight for what is right. I wont "Agree to Disagree" when something is wrong. Folks in power say that to preserve the status quo.
