I could play the first one fine but the vacation expansion pack loading bar that comes up when I get to the neighborhood never loads more than 15%? Help!

Uninstall the expansion pack and reinstall it. After that, throw both away because they're junk and get a copy of sims 2 + nightlife + open for business + university.
On second thought, just quit playing sims, because maxis is a greedy company who does nothing but put out a basic core and then expect to sell millions of sequals. Greed is bad.
Oh, and if you do insist on playing sims still and heed my advice about sims2, go to http://www.modthesims2.com and you willl find thousands of downloads for your game. It's an awesome site!
