sound is transmitted from one place to another with the help of molecular or atomic movements in the form of waves. In the medium which is present in between the two places ie; source of the sound and your ears.
when sound originates it pushes the particles(molecules..)one than other, than other.... in this manner it reaches the another place.
it can travel in different mediums with different speed.
fastest in airy medium
faster in liquid medium
fast in solid medium
each medium has its own capacity to transmition, depeds on the movability(density)of the particles in the medium

Hi. If there is a transfer media like water or air then the sound creates vibration that travel through the media. The vibrations effect objects after striking them. Pluck a guitar string and another guitar many feet away will vibrate with the same sound.

sound waves are just vibrations that travel through whatever medium happens to be between the thing making the sound and your ear. it won't really travel through a vacuum because there aren't enough molecules/atoms/whatever to transmit the vibrations, but it travels through water and air and many solids because there is enough matter there to transmit it.

A is vibrating. This is "sound."

A contacts B, which causes B to start vibrating. B contacts C which causes C to start vibrating. C contacts D to cause D to start vibrating. D contacts E ...

Y contacts Z to cause Z to start vibrating. Now Z is emitting the sound A started with, even though Z and A are some distance apart.

Same is ripples travel from a point when you throw a stone in the water. Except sound waves travel in all directions, not just 2-dimensionally, like on a flat pind.
