There is only one answer to this question: feeling powerless.
Now the question is: 'What leads up to such an extreme feeling of powerlessness that a person conducts horrific acts against humanity?'
Take the American Revolution for example. We tried to take the British head to head on the battlefield but quickly learned they were better equipped and we were going to lose. At that point, we were powerless against our enemy in battling him on his own terms. So what did we do... did we lay down and surrender... did we say 'oh well forget it'... No, we created militias that did not wear uniforms and would hide them in trees, etc.. and attack the British troops when they least expected it.
We won that war using guerrilla methods that today would be called terrorism.
You see this same thing happening with the Palestinians, Hezbollah, The Taliban and Hamas. They are powerless against the technology, weaponry and troops levels of the West. Yet, they will not lay down and surrender, etc....
It is human nature to fight back and when you are losing, you find other means to fight.
Going back to the question I presented about what led up to such extreme feelings of powerlessness, that is where you will find varying answers. Powerlessness when referring to groups of ppl or nations as a whole on a global level, basically results from decades, if not centuries, of oppression, imperialistic influences and religious indifference.
Btw, this is the rational answer which does not cover the terrorists that are just simply madmen. For example, Hitler and Bush. In those two circumstances, their terrorist acts stem from their goal of global domination and to be the world's only superpower.

Money really...the ones doing the fighting over the lies are expendable in the eyes of the leaders who orchestrate the events.
Terrorism is a highly sucessful business, and the oil companys are well aware of how this terrorism game works!

U fairly are the voice of reason! I completely accept as true with each little thing u stated - Israel's regulations in course of the Palestinians only safeguard their own self-pastime and make life on the different aspect hell for the Palestinians. U call it, the Israelis have carried out it to the Palestinians: warfare crimes, human rights abuses, damaged peace grants, settlement boom, centred on civilians, denying human beings get admission to to therapy, preventing them getting to their jobs, and now electrical energy. yet between the important complications looks that Israel are by some skill continually considered because the 'good adult adult males', and inspite of they do they are 'only conserving' themselves. i imagine this takes position because extremely some the western media is professional-us and professional-Israel, because it really is basically owned by skill of those form of communities. And the US president became helped into place of work by skill of the tremendous donations from professional-Israeli communities; as will the subsequent one. there is extremely some lack of understanding about what's happening in Israel and the occupied territories, extremely some conceitedness and denial by skill of the Jewish zionists, and finally there is not any adequate voice contained in the international prepared to face-up and tell the reality.

Beachbum, I don't know how to say this politely, ...... your an idiot hahahahahaha
Terrorism is not one mans freedom fighter, is an others terrorist, as you infer, nor is it the feeling of powerless... It is an act of using violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes. Your liberal interpretation demonstrated quite openly tho the answer to this question. The core of terrorism is, just as you demonstrate, is intolerance.

the need to preserve their way of life, culture and religious beliefs?
we are a corruptive bunch and are evil in their eyes (prob not too far from the truth lol), and we need to be sqwashed.
perhaps they should just cap their oil wells and stop supporting our evil empire. after all, they should just bomb themselves for helping to create our western decadent lifestyle. then they can turn into a third world country and isolate themselves, therefore preserving their culture by keeping outside influences and the power of money away from them.

I agree with BeachBum – to a point.
It is not religious indifference, but religion and religious meddling, and most governments that are the core causes of racism, bigotry, hatefulness and warmongering. And, they accomplish it by making people fearful: of the devil, hell, communism, liverals, conservatives, non-Christians, non-Muslems, non-whatever group.
Basically, it always comes down to a group of (mostly, and almost always) men who have seized and centralized power. There has never been a government or religion in history that has not raped-tortured-and-killed on an obscene level. Although they usually start out practicing their art on outsiders (which can defined as the need arises), they invariably turn in on their own as well (again, by redefining the definition of ‘outsider’).
America has lasted as long as it has because the Founding Fathers did everything in their power to keep religion out of government. There is no mention, and not a single reference to God, Jesus, or Chrsitianity anywhere in the US Constitution. And they could not have been more clear than in 1797 when the US Congress passed by unanimous vote and with no objections:
“As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion”
http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/diplomacy/barbary/bar1796t.htm
And:
JOHN ADAMS: “How has it happened that millions of myths, fables, legends and tales have been blended with Jewish and Christian fables and myths and have made them the most bloody religion that has ever existed? Filled with the sordid and detestable purposes of superstition and fraud?” (Letters to F.A. Van Der Kamp 1809-1816)
THOMAS JEFFERSON: I join you [John Adams], therefore, in sincere congratulations that this den of the priesthood is at length broken up, and that a Protestant Popedom is no longer to disgrace the American history and character.”
“In every country and in every age the priest [any and every clergyman] has been hostile to liberty; he is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.”
“I have recently been examining all the known superstitions of the world, and do not find in our particular superstition [Christianity] one redeeming feature. They are all alike, founded upon fables and mythologies.”
“His [Calvin's] religion was demonism. If ever man worshiped a false God, he did.”
“Their [Presbyterian’s] ambition and tyranny would tolerate no rival if they had power.”
“It is not to be understood that I am with him [Jesus] in all his doctrines. I am a Materialist.”
JAMES MADISON: Christianity neither is, nor ever was apart of the common law. Feb. 10, 1814
The establishment of the chaplainship to Cong[res]s is a palpable violation of equal rights, as well as of Constitutional principles: The tenets of the chaplains elected [by the majority] shut the door of worship agst the members whose creeds & consciences forbid a participation in that of the majority.”
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN: Some volumes against Deism fell into my hands. They were said to be the substance of sermons preached at Boyle’s Lecture. It happened that they produced on me an effect precisely the reverse of what was intended by the writers; for the arguments of the Deists, which were cited in order to be refuted, appealed to me much more forcibly than the refutation itself. In a word, I soon became a thorough Deist.”
JOHN TYLER: “The United States have adventured upon a great and noble experiment, which is believed to have been hazarded in the absence of all previous precedent -- that of total separation of Church and State.
ABRAHAM LINCOLN: “My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvationand the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them.” (to Judge JS. Wakefield, after Willie Lincoln's death)
MARY TODD LINCOLN: “Mr. Lincoln was not a Christian.”
ULYSSES S. GRANT: Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church and the private school supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and state forever separate.” (Address to the Army of the Tennessee, Des Moines, Iowa, September 25, 1875)
In the early 1950s, Madison's Capital Times editor John Patrick Hunter took to the streets with a petition, (which was actually the Declaration of Independence, along with portions of the Bill of Rights) and tried to get people to sign it. Only one in 112 did. The rest found it too subversive.

terrorist is what the big army calls the little army.
someone thinks terrorists frighten us with their devious ways? you mean like shock and awe? you mean like torturing and murdering innocent people in abu graihb (our military says we killed at least 2 dozen there and 99% were innocent; we tortured hundreds....)
terrorists are typically people without power confronting people with power. as with everything these days, even terror can be phony, as bin laden pretends to be 'of his people' when he is merely, according to richard clarke and other experts, trying to become a leader of saudi arabia and is doing what he must to play to his constituency...
all these explanations of muslim terrorists make me wonder if anyone remembers Tim McViegh or, in europe, the IRA? sheesh people.
