I think the rule is a little biased. How can you join the Army and die at 18 but you can't join the NBA? You can be an actor at 18 but a black athlete can't join the NBA like he can't make a decision for himself without someone telling him what to do. What if you get injured as a freshman and it effects you money. It's not fair.

the rule also means that white athletes can't join at 18 either. it's not racist just because it may affect more blacks than whites. you do NOT have a right to play in the NBA, playing pro basketball is a privilege. the NBA was protecting their constituents, the current players, the majority of whom are black, so you seem to bearguing that all the black players in the NBA voted for a racist rule. The NBA has every right to regulate who can play pro basketball, just like the NFL, MLB, and NHL do. it's not in the NBA's interest to bring in unpolished players who are more likely to be immature, make poor decisions, and are unproven on a major stage. the amount of money involved is a big difference, you don't find many 18 yearold actors making millions, and so the owners have the right to regulate who they want to make investments in. the government has decided that at 18 you can fight and die for your country. college is not the only option, there is also prep school, playing overseas, simply working with a personal trainer and coach, or what oj mayo is considering, an exhibition tour with other top hs players. other employers have the right to determine that an employee must be 16 or 18 or have a certain academic degree, so why not the NBA?

I understand were your coming from but ur point about an Actor is very shaky, You can act at ages younger than One Year old. I agree with the Army Thought tho. Personally I Think it is to help college basketball and some of the Kids. Not every kid out of HS is LeBron. I think some of these kids like Kwame Brown would have greatgly benfittted from the college game had they played under a sound coach, which most would have given there talent. Also the NFL has a stricter rule for entrance, you must be three years removed from High School graduation. The only reason the MLB and Nhl can get away with drafting HSers is because they put them in the Minors for a while so they can mature and some day help the big club

Not racist, but not very well thought out. It makes very little sense, same goes for the NFL rule. It is not fair, but I don't think the race card enters in because it effects all athletes, although I know it does effect more African americans. I guess a lawsuit needs to be brought by the Players Union.

NO its not racist its just a means by which the NCAA keeps its farm system in place, and keeps the top level high school players in college at least for a year. If all the McDonald's all Americans left every year without ever playing a game of college ball the NCAA feels like it would loose millions in revenue. That's something people should think about when they say "why pay student athletes". Think of the millions made by the NCAA every season off of march madness, and the bowl series, the bowl championship.

18 seems pretty reasonable to me. If a minimum age of 18 makes the NBA racist, what does that make the NFL which has an effective minimum age of 21 or so, given that you pretty much have to attend college first to join the NFL?

The rule applies to whites also. It doesn't read if you are black and 18 you can't join the NBA. I think the rule is stupid, but I don't get the racists point you are trying to make.

I believe the rule applies to all below 18 years of age, so it's not racist. In every contest, it has its own rules, and we cannot do anything about it. Even in high school basketball, there is also a rule not to accept players who are over-age. So I guess there's no exception for it.

because you cannot sign a contract if you are a minor.... therefore you must be 18.... stop trying to put race into something that only has to do with age...

Please understand........ at 17 you cannot be held responsible for a contract you sign because you are a MINOR!

Yes you can be on a scholastic team, yes you might get hurt but you are not under contract.

Actors can be 0-17 WITH a parents CONSENT but not without it...at 18 they sign and make their own deal and decisions.
