The average is 4-6 months.
I started my first 3 children on Gerber rice cereal at around 4 months, but because I start it very thin and gradually thicken it, I had no problems. For the first week the cereal is a small portion, (about a tablespoon) and not much thicker than milk. After a week I make it slightly thicker and gradually progress until the cereal is a normal soft and smooth texture. The next week I introduce their first fruits- usually bananas. They get a week of bananans, then apples. After that is peaches, then the pears.

I started my 4th baby on cereal at 3 months however, because milk was starting to be not enough for him and he was hungry all the time. But again, I started him on very thin cereal and slowly worked him up. He's 5 months old now and starting vegetables.

All 4 of my kids are very healthy and have ZERO food allergies.

Wow did you get a lot of different answers. So you probabally know what you did when you asked the question!
I don't mean to judge, but I cannot believe that someone would give a 2 week old baby cereal, or that a doctor would tell them to. I had trouble giving my 2 week old baby formula (after only breastmilk) becuase I was worried that her tummy couldn't handle it.
As far as I know you are to wait until they are 4 or 5 months old. And the reason is because their digestive tract is not yet fully developed and they can't handle solid food. I would look it up, because if that is true, even if they are more hungry than the average baby, or heavier at birth, that does not mean that their digestive tract will develope faster. Just my opinion, not trying to offend anyone.

Babies shouldn't have cereal or any other solids until around 6 months of age. They aren't ready to properly digest it before then. Starting too early can lead to allergies, diabetes and obesity.

WIC told me four to six months but my baby was starving and would finish his bottle in a matter of minutes and start crying like he was in pain. He was TWO WEEKS old. I took him to the doctor and with his suggestion, we started with the rice cereal by gerber and put it in a feeding bottle with a half a jar of bananas from gerber. (this was only for his night time bottle) He loved it and was very happy. We continued with this until he was able to eat on his own. My son is very healthy now and has always been at the top of his height and weight level for his age (and I don't mean overweight). I am mexican and short...what am I going to do with this big handsome boy, I don't know. Good luck. You know what is best for your baby and not anyone else. If your baby is starving, do something about it.

No earlier than 6 months, unless baby is formula fed and has reached a high amount of formula (which can be hard on the kidneys), so in those cases no earlier than 4 months. Baby should also be sitting up unassisted and has lost the toung thrust reflex by then. Starting earlier than that has been linked to food allergies, diabetes in adulthood, asthma, and GI tract issues later in life.

It's best to wait until 6 months. Start very slowly, breastmilk or formula is supposed to be the main food source for the first year 75% of their calories should come from milk. Look for signs that your baby is ready. Here's a helpful website!! It lists the signs to look for and tells how much to feed your baby.

I started giving her cereal at one month. I could hear it in her cry that she was hungry. Start with a tablespoon in her/his baby bottle and make the nipple hole a little bigger. Make sure you watch your baby while they suck so you know that your baby is used to it. Watch you will see that your baby will be more content and sleep more sound. The doctors say 6 months and they also say don't give them any water, but you need to go with your gut instinct.

the pediatricians say 4 months and mixing it with fruit prevents constipation. But alot of people do it at about 3 months. but do it by spoon, not bottle and u need to make sure he is developmentally ready to eat it. But usually 3-4 months.
