Volume limits for 32-bit Windows ( Windows XP) is 2 terabytes.
( Yes terabytes )

Ok after reading the other responses i need to edit this, you can have as many as your PC will accept, on a nice rig you can run , say 2 WD Raptor X 150gb set in RAID 0 as a boot drive and 3 Seagate Barracuda 750gb set in RAID 5 for 1.5 terabytes of redundant storage, youll lose one of the drive's capacity to parity, but the final config is nice.

This depends on the version of windows xp you have. The first release only supports up to 130. neaning if you have two 160 gigs it will find 2 130 gig drives. The newer version (the last 3 or so years) have fixed this. Also if you have the old version and it does not find the full 160gig (give or take like 10 gigs) you need to instal the service packs. You may need to slipstream the windows installation cd and the sp1 and 2 onto one install disc.

So if your windows xp cd has sp1 on it already like most due then dont worry .I got my cd the first month it came out and so mine doesnt have it.

I had to do http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp1_cd.htm
its a bit rough but works nicely

Your question may be related to BIOS settings, but likely a limitation of XP. Windows can handle big drives, I have a 250 S2, a 160 S2, and an 80 IDE all in the same unit.

You can run as many as your system supports, it may be up to six if you remove optical drives. Yes, it's possible.

You need to upgrade XP to SP2 to get proper support for things like NCQ and big partitions, or at least SP1. The 127 GB partition limit was removed with SP1.

as far as i know, if the system bios can recognize the drive, so can windows. and you can have up to four harddrives on any PC, two on the primary controller and two on the secondary controller. the only thing is you won't have a cdrom, because a cdrom takes one of those four spots.

Windows can support as many HDs as you can physically connect. This number depends on your motherboard, and how many ports it has. Many computers can have four although some, like mine, can have six.
