Hi,

I attempted to burn a CD a few weeks ago and had trouble removing the CD. I actually forgot about it and then we started having trouble and getting a no signal msg on the screen when the computer turned on, but not straight away. As long as you clicked on explorer it was ok and once I removed the CD things were fine. So tonight I tried again to burn a CD and within seconds of closing the CD drive with the CD in it, the no signal message popped up and re-started the computer. What is going on here? I think it has something to do with CD drive, but how do I fix this? I had a search and found a few questions similar but no real results I can work with. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Trouble removing the CD? What kind of trouble? If it was physical, stuck in the drive, reef on it to get it out trouble, 'no signal' may mean exactly that, the drive is not responding because it may be unplugged... have you opened the case and checked the drive cables? Can you see it in My Computer? It is powered, that is plain, so you may want to start by reseating the 'ribbon cable', the wide grey cable attached to the back of the drive, this with the machine OFF and UNPLUGGED (just the power, not every damn thing), of course . . .

sounds like it could be bad cd (dirty from fingerprints, scratched) that was put in drive, drive or cd could need cleaned or even replaced. problem could also be in your cd burning software. check to see if software is loaded right and see if an update is available for software. if handy with the internal workings of computer, check to see if wires are secure. if you are not able to do this, find someone who knows what to do locally, a friend would be better and cheaper than a computer shop. your no signal problem could be from bad connection of either end of data cables or a bad cable also. if finding out drive is bad, it should only take an hour or less to replace with another cd rewite drive, cable will take less time. check how it is installed to replace same way. some new drives have new cables with them also, i would replace both if you have them when replacing drive. less chance to miss a bad connection this way. had this type of problem before when working on older computers, can happen with brand new ones also. cheap try would be a cd\dvd drive cleaner and canned air could help also if it is from dust. hope this helps

There may be a problem with the media you are using for the cd burner. Could be a couple of things. 1) Bad media. Did you recently purchase cheap cdr's? 2) Firmware cannot handle the media you are using. Find the website of your CD burner manufacturer, and check to see if there are any firmware upgrades for your particular CDR drive.

If this doesn't work, and you haven't changed anything with your hardware on your system, your drive is probably bad, and there really isn't much you can do except replace it.

If you have access to another computer, try taking its CD drive out and putting it in yours. If your computer works, go and buy a new drive. They're pretty cheap these days anyway.

you desire a CD burner and CD burning utility. The utility lets you p.c. what you p.c. to burn to the CD and the CD burner follows the learning you provide in the utility.
