i need to glue beading, sequins and ribbon to a shirt, the look i want wont look good if i hand stitch everything. the employees at Joanns here in town have NO CLUE as to helping people with arts and crafts questions. what i want is an adhesive that is permanant. i dont want it to wash out. any suggestions? the glue i have used to test is Aleene's original tacky glue, and it does NOT work. any suggestions???

There is a glue made for attaching sequins and beads, and I think Aleenes actuallly does make a form of it. Not the tacky glue, but one marked specifically for sequins, beads and shisha mirrors. The problem with all of these type glues is that they really don't form a good bond or they will make the fabric very stiff in that spot. Worst case, I actually had some that took the coating off the beads. I know you don't think it will look good if you stitch it, but have you considered or used the clear thread? They do have improved versions that are much softer than the old fishing line stuff. Gutterman makes a really nice one, though I'm sure the other major thread companies do as well. The clear versions won't even be visible, and at least the thread will survive a wash or dry clean. The glue often doesn't, even when it says it's specifically for sequins and fabric.

You're probably not going to find anything that's both permanent and washable. You could try fusible iron-on fabric for the ribbon, but it wouldn't work for the beads and sequins. You might just have to actually hand-stitch it if you want it to stay on for a long time!

Good luck.

JoAnn's has a special stitch glue I used to use this when I first started sewing. It was called Sew No More. You can machine wash your fabrics it bonds beautifully to almost all fabrics. Just be careful using it. never tried it with jewels though...

I don't know of a permanent glue that works on fabric and is washable.

Sequined clothing is set with those bejeweler machines. They sell those at Joann"s.

We always used fabric glue. They rarely fell off. They should sell it at Joann's; if not, try WalMart. If you have a Crafts etc nearby, they carry it.
Good luck.
