Type S (sport) means the chassis is normal, but with a more powerful engine. You can have all the bells and whistles on a Type S.
Type R (racing) is a minimalistic chassis. There are no options (often times to include no A/C or power steering) for the purpose of weight reduction. Type R's typically have the high end engine of their Type S counterparts.
So, to answer your question, the Type R's are "better" in regards to performance. The Type S's are "better" for daily driving.

I'll assume youre reffering to an RSX; the type S is over here in the states, the type R is across the sea in Japan. Obviously half of you haven't ridden in either; and those of you that talked down on the type S are missing out. Type S is USDM, Type R is JDM. USDM cars are of course not going to be as fast... The Type R has 20 more hp (to the crank), a LSD transmission (Limited Slip Differential, makes equal power to both wheels instead of one), red interior, no audio equipment/sound deadening equipment. Other than that, the only thing else is that the Type S is the American pigs dream, with full leather interior, cupholders, etc. All the stupid pointless things that aren't neccisary. Takata seatbelts on the S with leather seats. And the Type R has red Recaro seats vs. the leather in the S.
K20A2 is the engine code, both are 6-speed. Niether the S or R come in a 5 speed or auto trans., those are only available on base model RSX's. (Pieces of crap)
S has an ecu restricted to 147/8 mph, the R doesn't. The type R transmission has alot shorter gears as well, better for acceleration vs. top speed.
Hope this helps, some of you need to get some education before you give people the wrong information...

There is no better between the two.
The Type R/Type S are just the trim levels of a certain car models.
For example: Prelude Type S, Integra Type R are the highest trim levels for those models.
The RSX Type S is the highest trim level of the RSX...but just in case you dont know....the RSX is the Integra. Since we dont get the fully loaded ITR here in the States...we have the RSX Type S.
With the NSX there is a Type R and Type S Zero...both are regarded as the highest trim level...but they both offer different options that the other doesnt offer. (Suspension tweaks, etc...)
At the Tokyo Auto Show, Honda just released a new Type R and Type S hatchbacks.
In this comparison...the Type S is lower on the trim level than the Type R. The Type S usually has a less powerful engine in comparison to the Type R...unless there is no Type R trim level above the Type S.

Type s is a model brand of acura. And the type r is the model brand for honda, along with the type h which came on the honda prelude and type H means it has the sport tuned suspension upgrade. As far as the question which one is better; they are both nice and they are made my the same company, so really it doesnt matter which one. They will perform similar.

here's the million dollar answer... it's just the name!! wow isn't that crazy!! there isn't a specified difference between type R and type S, it's just the higher end models of the given vehicle. Half these people that answered your question probably drive a stock civic with a type r sticker on it.

what model of car that you referring to? Normally type-S is for normal drive like city driving in which 'S' stands for Sporty and type-R is meant for performance drive which is 'R' stands for Racing. Type-R is more extreme compare to type-S. For those who like to 'play' with engine management/modification i suggest get a type-R model. Hope this helps. :)

It can vary by model, but generally type S is suited for handling, and Type R is suited for acceleration
