What most people are concerned about is the destructive power packed into a very small space. One bomb can take out say New York.

The second thing people are concerned about is the radioactive fallout that conveniently kills for weeks afterward. Sailors on a Chinese junk and an American Warship both were hit with radioactive ash. the Chinese didn't wash, the Americans did .. all the Chinese on the Junk were dead within a week. The Americans on the boat .. some died 40 years later with strange cancers.

Making an atomic bomb is very difficult .. you have to get the fission-ables and the fusion-ables and then know how to get it to explode. So many have been interested in stopping the spread of this technology.

Making Biological and Gases are very expensive too, but cheaper in the long run. This is why there was much fear of this in both the Gulf Wars.

A very scary fictional story is "the white plague" by frank Herbert. almost a must read.

There are not doubt many technical differences. The fundamental difference is that the destructive energy of an atomic bomb arises from nuclear fission (breaking of chemical atoms). Non-nuclear weapons do not break atoms, but deal with the explosive decomposition of chemical compounds (bonds between atoms within the compound break, releasing energy, but the atoms do not break).

Hi. As a weapon the task is to kill. An atomic bomb kills by blast, radiation, and fires. Most non-nuclear weapons kill only by blast and fire alone. A neutron bomb does more radiation damage (neutron) and kills life while leaving a lot of structures. They are also lighter.

Atomic bombs leave radiation that can cause cancer in the long run. Also when the atomic bumbs were dropped in Japan the blast was so great that the light burned people's clothes patterns to their skin.

Greater devastation over a wider area. Lingering effects (studies show radiation can last upto 50 years) causing cancer, birth defects, etc.
