I'm older now, but they are still using that line like they did years ago. The sad part? That's nonsense, and everybody knows it. I mean what are you two gonna do now? Have a catch in the back yard? Catch frogs down at the lake? We need to change this swan song. Any ideas?

I think it means that you don't key each others cars, don't call drunk at 2:00 a.m., and are cordial when you meet in public. Saying "lets be friends" is much better than saying "you suck". Don't you think?

It is just a polite way for a woman to try and let you down with out telling you that they are utterly and completely uninterested in you. It is the same way a guy will say "I'll call you" knowing right there on the spot that there is no way he is ever going to call the girl. It sounds nice to remain friends but they know that men have no interest in just being friends. Let's stay friends is a great way to draw an awkward conversation to a close and be free of the situation and the relationship. By the way, men have their own version called... "It's not you... it's me!".

Women don't ALWAYS say that...it is a stupid thing to say... but if they are dumping you they probably mean that they care about you and don't want to lose you completely...they want to still talk to you and have some sort of "friendly relationship" with you. There is probably a better way of saying it than "we can still be friends though"...

some can be genuine-i know because i am still friends with most of mine-just because the romance fades does not mean there is nothing to salvage. but, for most people, those words are the equivalent of taking the easy way out with the least amount of confrontation.

Saying we can still be friends after dumping means>>> I'm not in love with you, but I don't want you to hurt.
Idea>>> Say it like it is.
