The curious thing is, it cranks but won't restart for 1-2 minutes. After that time, it always restarts. It has baffled my mechanic. Any ideas?

if its fuel injected have someone check for any codes also have someone check IAC(idle air control) see if its working or clogged, which stays open to keep the car running and to help air go into the engine when u let go of the pedal, also a bad TPS( trottle position sensor) can cause the car to die and not idle correctly. any info on the make and model car will help to identify the problem. but like they say time to find a new mechanic.

verify the gasket below the carb. verify to make confident the butterflys aren't any more hitting the proper of the intake manifold. make confident you've the potential brake booster hose hooked as a lot because the carb, of if you're no longer utilizing potential brakes, cap off the nipple on the carb with a large vacuum cap. good success

Could be a number of things, youmight want to use a scan tool to see if your throwing codes. Autozone does this for free. would be a good start
