x-y=8
3x+3y=24
you have to solve for one of the variables. I'll solve for....x
x-y=8 (add y to both sides to get x by itself)
x-y+y=8+y
x=y+8
now you substitute the value of x into the remaining equation
3(y+8) + 3y=24
3y + 24 + 3y=24
now you're solving for the value of y by getting y on the side by itself. combine like terms
3y + 3y +24=24
6y+24=24
subtract 24 from both sides to get it by itself
6y +24-24=24-24
6y=0
Divide both sides by 6
6y/6=0/6
1y (which is the same as just y)=0
NOW...you go back to the original equation because you have to solve for x. We'll use the first equation but it doesn't matter which one you use because you'll eventually get the same answer.
x-y=8
We know that y=0 so we plug that in
x-0=8
add 0 to both sides
x-0+0=8+0
x=8
so x=8, y=0
you can use the second to check your answer by plugging in the numbers for the letters
3x + 3y=24
3(8) + 3(0)=24
24 +0 =24
24=24
if the two sides are equal like they are in this case that means the answer is right. If the two sides aren't, your answer is wrong.
Hope this helps.

3x + 3y = 24
First, subtract 3y from both sides
3x + 3y - 3y = 24 - 3y
3x = 24 - 3y
Next, multiply both sides by 1/3
(3x) (1/3) = (24 - 3y) (1/3)
x = 8 - y
Now substitute x (8 - y) in the other problem
x - y = 8
(8 - y) - y = 8
8 - 2y = 8
Subtract eight from both sides...
8 - 2y -8 = 8 - 8
2y = 0
Multiply both sides by 1/2
(2y) (1/2) = (0) (1/2)
y = 0
Now if x = 8 - y, and y is 0 then...
x = 8 - 0
x = 8
S (x=8, y=0)
Now, I'm not sure... but I believe that this problem is independent. I'll try to look it up and get back with you.
(later) YEP! Independent because you can find an absolute answer.

Rearranging the first equation x=y+8. Put that into the second equation in the place of x:
3(y+8)+3y=24
6y+24=24
y=0
so
x=8
(8,0) is solution. Independent because there is a specific solution.

Manipulate the fist equation so that x=8+y
Then, plug that into the second equation like this: 3(8+y)+3y=24
Solve that for y. Then whatever you get for y, plug it back into that first equation to get x.
No clue as to the other bit, though.

from eq.1
y = x-8
subs. to eq. 2
3x + 3(x-8) = 24
3x + 3x - 24 = 24
6x = 48
x = 8
subs. to eq.1
y = 8 - 8
y = 0
therefore, x=8 and y=0
