We were with Bell South up until a few months ago AND a cell phone service. Paying Bell $70.00 a month for an extended service plan we never used. Finally, we cut the cord about four months ago. Converted the house phone number over to an additonal cell phone for $10 more dollars a month. And bought a PhoneLabs Dock-n-Talk on the internet. Now every phone in the house rings when the house cell phone rings, And you can talk and call just like you normal house phone.
We had to bump up our cell phone planfrom 550 to 700 minutes, so an additional $10. So net saving is $50 per month and we can carry the house cell phone anywhere we go.
Note: out internet is through cable company, so we didn't have to worry about that side of it.
So just get another cell phone and dedicate it as the home phone. And tell Ma Bell to get in the 21st century.

It's better than having to pay $125 to get a cell phone turned on. It's all in your credit rating - mostly how new you are to having credit. If you have never had any utilities your name, then the phone company doesn't know if you'll screw them or not. If you've got a good credit rating, then they can more easily tell if they'll have to fight to get their money out of you.
It happens, and you either pay, or go without. I paid $100 to have my cable turned on - I figured as much, because my credit isn't all it could be.

They try to suck as much money from you as they can. They could care less if you choose them. Try a cell phone- or get service over the internet. Some internet service is really cheap with long distance included.

It's called a "deposit" and unfortunately the companies have been BURNED in the past many times by many who set up service, keep it for a number of months and NEVER pay the bill ..not even a single bill...can you blame them? I would do the same, especially if you have no credit or BAD credit ..price you have to pay for your sins of the past!

The big corps are not stupid. Have you ever heard the phrase "do me one time, shame on you. Do me a second time shame on me." well so many people have Miss-used the honor system they had to do something to take care of the cost. Not everyone is like that. Not me but my neighbor is. So why should I have to pay higher prices for his mistake. $50.00 is a good price. Did you ask if the $50 would be credited to your account? It probably is.

I don't think that's fair at all. I don't mean to pry on you, but do you have bad credit? That might be why they are charging you the 50 dollars before they show up.

If you have a cel phone, forget about the land line. If you don't have a cel phone, get one and then forget about the land line.
For the same money as a land line, you get free domestic long distance included with your minutes.

They make this decision after doing a quick check of credit history, so you might want to check your own credit report and see what the problem is.

I would look into other companies or better yet have you considered a cell phone? I wouldn't pay that.
