The film's title comes from the nickname invented by students and staff for detention at New Trier High School, the school attended by the son of one of John Hughes' friends. Thus, those who were sent to detention were designated members of "The Breakfast Club". "The Breakfast Club" at that school probably took its name in turn from the title of American radio's longest running network entertainment show, broadcast from Chicago, 1933 to 1968.

Because the kids in the "Breakfast Club" had Saturday Morning Detention, which is where they meet and the whole movie takes place...kind of an unwilling, motley club meeting at the time of breakfast in a renegade sorta way......

Hughes wrote the script in two days: July 4th and 5th of 1982. He got the title from Bobby Richter (the son of a friend); Hughes asked him what detention was called at his school in Winnetka, IL -- "The Breakfast Club," referring to Saturday morning.

Have you seen the movie?
They all have detention first thing in the morning (breakfast time) and they all bond together kind of like people in a club.

I thought the title came from these kids who had to spend their Saturday at school early in the morning for detention.

Well I always wondered about that too because it does say the name at the end of the movie, but they never mentioned it before. Me and Krystal were having this discusion a couple days ago. Anyways I guess they'd be there at breakfast time and it's a really good name so who cares? well me,. but that's beside the point.

I know that Anthony Michael Hall mentions it at the end of his paper. My guess is that since they were all in detention and it started in the morning... breakfast time.
