You can normally tell a person's intelligence easily by how tolerant they are of others cultural differences.
People who are not well educated tend to have very narrow minded opinions on what is normal and acceptable and therefore a lot of prejudices.
People with more education have studied more cultures and have probably had the financial means to travel and experience other cultures for real.
What a boring world this would be if everyone looked alike and acted alike. I enjoy the cultural differences and respect them.
It's also important to learn about cultural differences in order to avoid offending others. For example, did you know that Japanese people NEVER leave their chopsticks sticking out of a bowl of rice? The reason is that looks similar to a Japanese grave, so they would never want something on their table to remind them of a cemetery. That is just one example that I've personally messed up about that could have been avoided if I had understood their culture better.
Learning about other cultures is fun!

So that when someone acts in a way which is not what you would expect, or maybe even offends you, you can look at it from a different perspective... you can take the cultural difference of that person into account and maybe not react in a negative way.
For example, cultures all over the world have different acceptable levels of personal space. A person from a different culture might stand way too close to you, causing a visceral reaction which you cannot control due to your culture, but by understanding that you come from a culture where the threshold is farther away, you can make allowances and maybe feel more at ease with that person so close to you.

We live in a world that is filled with differences even in ones own culture. If we were to learn and understand that differences of people, even the ones less fortunate than us, then we can come closer to a world without racism and ethnocentrism. We need to come to a point in which we dont forget our own culture but either embrace it or acknowledge its presence. We shouldn't just blend into some "melting pot" without knowing the ingredients to get there. The world is massive, we shouldn't focus on just one culture.
It was said earlier that the richer the person is the more likely they will better understand other cultures is not totally true. Yes they are able to travel and emerse themselves in completely different environments. But what you have to remember is, are they appreciating the difference and enjoying the wonders of a multi-cultural world or are they looking down on them to compare how their culture is better. People in power have the power to change political, educational, and even religious traditions to better focus on a perticular culture. Just thing why is it there is such a divide amoung every difference there is in the world. If we are all here to better the world then why do we do so by seperating ourselves.

I think it is important so that misunderstandings can be avoided and to facilitate communication. We should all have respect for others cultural differences. I love learning about other cultures and people but I think that some people are scared and small minded and think that anything different is bad or stupid. We all have something to learn from others!

To share individual, regional, and cultural perspectives; and to gain an understanding and insight to the issues relating to the world and global matters. Diversity is closely linked to organization effectiveness and feeds the dynamics associated with garnering social power, distributing authority, and exercising leadership. It is easier to vary the color of faces than to listen closely to their experiences and alter our thinking about the complex dynamics of difference that play out among us. An exclusive focus on placing people into a set of categories based on gender, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and so forth blinds us to the less visible and more complex dynamics of diversity of which we all are a part.

It broadens our horizons, makes us know that we aren't the only people in the world, get to see life from a different perspective, it's boring knowing people who are exactly the same as us, etc.
