There's a little switch on the back edge of the lid. The purpose is to stop the spin when the lid is opened. I think that the switch is broken or disconnected.

Does it sound like it is trying but nothing is happening?
If so the problem is most likely the coupler between the motor and the tranny. Pull the machine out from the wall and if there is a bunch of rubber particles on the floor that is the problem.
Fairly easy to fix. A good handyman should be able to look at the thing and figure out how to fix. About a $ 15 part.

There are many different methods that different manufacturers use to make a washer spin and many different things that can cause a machine to not spin. You should be more specific about the manufacturer and model if you want a real answer.

your washer is broken. the same thing happened to me. maybe the belt is loosened or it just needs a good fixin'. empty it's contents out and take it to the laundry mat fast unless you want your clothes smelling like mold.

could be a tension spring which holds the belt tight to a pulley, or the belt itself is broken.
