In shafted mines, such as those in Bendigo, how did the miner's remove the water from the shaft? I'm aware of how they do it now but how did they do it back then?

EDIT: Would the elevators in the shafts have been used to help pump the water out? If so, how?

There have always been two ways to remove water from shafts. Such pumps as might be available for short lifts and skips or buckets for deep ones. The same means as were used to remove the ore were also used to remove the water.

They used either a hand pump or an Archimedes Screw
