There is a comedian who paraphrased it best, (though his name escapes me at the moment), but his points were,... we used to watch television, to escape reality,, a man went to work, long hours, and it was hard physical, labor; so television was a form of relaxation.. there was no point to reality tv ,, cause the point of television was to enjoy, unwind, be entertained, etc. .. now people work hard, and come home to watch the same jack*** stuff they do daily,, it's like round the clock drama with no real escape.. but so many are wired into believing it's "reality"... With scripts, plots, selective casting, storylines, .. we're all led to believe that some reality show is what it claims to be, but we'd be bored to death just sitting, watching some moron on a couch, doing nothing but flipping channels, so they throw in some drama, and BAMMO,, they have a HIT!
I do miss the old shows, and I'm 34,, I catch them from time to time, like Andy Griffin (great values there), and even HeeHaw, (I know the jokes will pour in on that one, lol). I remember the Lawrence Welk show which I hated, but now that I think about it, it's was purely clean, classy and didn't contain offensive slurs, or explicits, to which now my child doesnt' think twice about hearing. There weren't gangstas, and degrading images of women, or ideals about prosperity that were falsely gained, there wasn't much drug exposure, and even a simple, romantic embrace, seemed enough,, gentle, and tender.. now it's a free for all..
I totally hear what you're saying and I'm not even some 80 year old longing for the ole days, .. seems once you reach a certain age bracket, or even some intellectual level, you begin to recognize just how convoluted it all is,, suggestive advertising, rating boosts, and lack of any substantial entertainment value. It's all gone to the toilet if you ask me,, but so many of having a dish on the side of our house, and still complaining about 150 channels, and nothing to watch.. good question. Be well!
