It totally depends on your personality and spirit and how you want to travel. Personally, I would hate a group tour because I relish my freedom.

Well, if it is your first time abroad, it makes more sense to travel in a group (tour package) or with someone more seasoned to overseas travelling instead. Unless you have had some prior experiences in overseas travel, you might get really affected by your cultural shock. I actually went to Sweden and Denmark back in 1998 with my younger sister, and it was more of a DIY thing 'cos I was staying at my penpals' houses instead. Backpacking is a great thing if you have company or have someone who knows the way around. You get to know the locals better and get to live as a local for a while. It's more fulfilling I must say. As for group package, it is a more touristy thing so it really depends on your interest. Are you there in Europe for the sightseeing stuff or is it to immerse yourself in its culture and life? Anyway, you can always join local tours when you are in Europe. A good place to start is at the counters of the hostel/hotel in which you would be staying at or at the Tourist Info Center. If you want to do backpacking, make sure you have all the details and map with you before you leave, so that you won't have problems getting around once you arrive. Anyways gd luck with it and enjoy your trip! :)

I travel a lot, also. And i carry my backpack everywhere.
I go most of the times on my own. But i also started as a person which had arranged the trip by somebody else (so i was going in group tours).

Back packing is freedom, but can be hard, as well. First time traveler? Go organized, and check if you like it! The backpacking v´can also bring less enjoyable time and less pleasant experiences.

Both Group Tours and Backpacking can be nice, and bad.
I won't say one is the only way. like i saw it said in another answer, it all depends on what kind of person you are.

Start slow, you have the time!
Enjoy!

P.S: i was giving this answer to underline some things said before (Which i agree with).

Not knowing you it's difficult to say for sure. I can however tell you that backpacking would be by far my choice. Group tours don't really let you experience the people and the country as a whole. Since it's your first time, a group tour might be better though. As you travel more and more you work those things out. Whatever you chose, I wish you the best!

Personally, backpacking is the way to go. Do it with a close group of 3-4 friends. It will definately come out cheaper, you get to see the "real" Europe. You wont be hassled by schedules and you might get an annoying tour guide (I know I did when I went to America).

What some friends and I were planning was to start in Israel, work our way up to Turkey, hop over to Greece, go up thru some Eastern European countries, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, England.

Do your research beforehand about the places you want to go to. Having a general idea of what you want to see and a rough timeframe would help. Check up on specific countries if they'll allow your passport to enter without a visa (I have an Israeli passport I can travel around Europe with it).

goup tours are OK, but limit your options. You never meet anyone form that country.

The great thing about back backing, is if you see something you like, or discover a new option you can explore it and not worry about if the bus leaves at 2:00

I advise picking a travel partner, then investing in a
Eurorail pass. You can go anywhere, anytime, stop at B&Bs (they are cheap) and have a great time.

Definitely backpacking, you can stop and go where you please and not have a set schedule to follow. Its much more convenient and cheaper. You'll enjoy your trip a lot more if you get to pick and choose where you go, and not have to follow with a group.
