Any parabola can be expressed as x^2 = 4ay. It may be necessary to shift the axis and all that jazz.

In the above

1. the axis of symmetry is x=0
2. the focus is the point (0,a)
3. the equation of the latus rectum is y = -a
4. the origin is at (0,0)

Parametrically it can be expressed as

x = 2ap
y = ap^2

where p is the parameter

Do you have a specific example.
