if anybody can help me on this one, I have a1998 nissan maxima and every time I turn on my car it makes a really loud screeching noise for about 20 sec, and then it stops. Then most of the times when the car is stoped and I am ready to accelerate it makes the same loud noise for about 8 sec and then stops. Does anybody know why is this? And how can I fix it? I already tried spraying the timing belt to grease it up but that didnt help. Please help, I would appreciate it. thanks

hard to say without hearing it, but my first guess would be that you have a belt that is slipping. it could need to be tightened (not possible on some vehicles) or replaced.

Sounds like a bearing about to go out. Best way to check and see if the belt is jumping around a lot when the engine is first started and when you accelerate. The jumping can be from the belt too loose, or if it only happens for a little while, because a pulley is dragging because of a bad bearing and causing excess strain on the tensioner. You can also pull the belt off, and spin each pulley (especially idlers and tensioner) and see if they feel tight or if they wabble. Or bring it to a mechanic if you don't know what I'm talking about.

fan belt,i would take it to a mechanic and if it able to be tightened do it.if it is the type that has a belt tensioner the tensioner could be bad or the belt streatched .also if the belt or belts are cracked haveit /them replaced. it could also be a pully that the bearings are getting bad.
i promise you that you wasnt spraying the timing belt,it is not visable they have a cover over them.
you do not NEED to take it to a dealership it tends to be more expensive than nessesary, aftermarket parts are as good and in some cases better than factory.

You want to loosen your belts and check the alternator, water pump, and other belt driven components ( air conditioning, power steering pump, etc) to see if they turn freely. If you have a bad component, it will make the belt squeal. Be sure to check the belt tensioner and look to see that the belt pulleys all line up straight. Your problem is definately with the drive belt system.

there is not any thanks to "tighten" the belt. once you've a better moderen automobile it comes with spring loaded belt tensioners. it really is only a wiped out accent stress belt( no longer called fan belts ). they are inexpensive to interchange and takes about 10 minutes with straightforward hand equipment.

either the belt needs to be tightened, or a bearing on one of the pulley's is on it's way out.
