My daughter is in 7th grade. Last year in sixth grade every time she was assigned a research report it was a major project that involved buying project board and ink for my color printer because they require pictures. Now I'm seeing it again in 7th grade. Also, these kids are not allowed to bring the projects on the bus so I have to drive her to and from school on those days. I never had to do this type of thing in school when I was a kid - not even high school (or college for that matter). And it isn't that they are being prepared for real life because presentations in the workplace are usually done on Power Point.
Okay, I know that this was more like a rant than a question but I just want to know - what is the benefit?

In 6th grade one teacher assigned one for every quarter. Another teacher assigned 2. So far this year (which is only a month old), she has one and I'm anticipating more. The research projects make sense - I just don't get the reason for presentations each and every time. They should save that for a last big one at the end of the school year.
Would the school commitee hear me if I complained to them?
I'm in MA.

good points about public school - it is btw. I think I'll start off by asking the teachers individually at the P/T conference after progress reports.
also, you are right about not pressuring for A's. My daughter is a a solid C student who can get B's if she really wants them and will fail when she slacks off - so I pressure her for a high C.

And- she's not in any advanced classes. These are regular 7th grade classes.

My son had a handful of those projects as well. It felt more like I was the one with this assignment with all the crap that was needed to put it together. And like you, I had to drive him to school when it was time to bring the project in. I didn't have to do this kind of stuff in grade school. And in HS the most I had to do is one major project. The rest of my "projects" were written reports/oral reports with maybe a small poster or something along those lines. I can see the teachers wanting the students to do more research because it's it's so much easier for them to get the information now. But the rest of it I think is ridiculous.

I don't know why a project board, but a few research reports are necessary so that the child will be prepared in high school and collage for the bigger reports. Besides, how many are there a year? There shouldn't be more than three or four

wow. what school is this, exactly? if it's a public school, the school is not allowed to require ANY student, by law, to spend vast amounts on the school. its public education, a right and not a priveledge. they cannot mandate you to drive your child instead of her using the bus as you may require that time for work, etc, to provide for your family.

as another point, in middle school grades do not count for anything! that means that it is much better for her to take the harder classes and get Cs and Bs than As - don't pressure her to get As please. you don't really sounds like the type, but i did just want to put it out there. and harder classes are not for people with more money to spend, either.

exercise your rights as a resident in the united states of america, demand public education to its full extent !!

I don't know they do it in my school to (i'm in the 7 th. 2) it sucks and makes my Mom really mad but she's lucky u drive her cuz I have to walk to and from school. It costs a lot of money and takes a lot of time too, and in the end u only learn a little bit of info. Sucks for parents, students, teachers so I have no idea who it's supposto benefite.

I would ask her Principal for the 7th grade curriculum to see if it has POSTERS ARE THE ONLY WAY TO DO REPORTS?

BTW what do the poor kids do if their parents don't have a printer? Cardboard ands crayons?

I dunno its not like that in my school. it might be your area location. i mean we only get like ONE major project you need pics, but not a lot. we usually just write essays, you can write them on binderpaper, or just type it. (Oh yah i live in CA)
