The first amendment to the US Constitution ensures freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press. Just about every country in the world in the 16th century (and many today) have laws and prisons for folks who say or think the wrong things, worship the wrong god, and print the wrong books and papers. Even in the UK, there are books that are banned - in the US, even if a book or paper's content is completely disgusting and reprehensible, you are free to print it or discuss it anywhere (although there are some limits - look up libel, slander, and the definition of obscenity and child-porn for details).

I think Thomas Jefferson said this: "If all of my rights were taken away, except that of freedom of speech, I would be able to get all the others back just by using that one."

Freedom of speech is extremely important if our country is to remain a democracy. However, freedom of speech is the enemy of socialism so those on the left work tirelessly to eliminate it.
