I lived in NZ for a year to pick up English, but my English has been getting worse even though I teach......don't know why, I guess the reason why is that I use a simple expression to students....please help me with my English. I would be appericeted if you could be a pen pal with me in English( if you are interested in Japanese, I'll give you Japanese Email as well)

Hi,
I am an English teacher too. I´ve been teaching for two years now and it has been a great experience. I have learned a lot from it. I learned English 6 years ago, and I think it gets better every day. It is said that what is useful for some people might not work in the same way for someone else. However, reading books in English, and watching TV programs has helped me a lot. English is changing constantly. There are always new words and slang phrases....and there are events or people that change the language too. I recommend to watch programs in English and to rent movies or books. This will help you a lot with expressions and structures, and will also keep you updated. It is also helpful because you will learn a lot about the culture and you will have interesting things to talk about in your class. You also learn a lot from students. Ask them in advance what kind of things they want to do and learn in your class. Using an Advanced Learner´s Dictionary is another great tool. If you want to provide your students with better and more complex definitions and expressions that are easy to understand this is the tool that you need. It will also help you expand your vocabulary and be more resourceful to your Ss. I hope this helps you.

I would love to learn japanese and visit japan. i hope to do it soon. I´m sorry i don´t have a lot of time to be writing e-mails, but if you post questions here...and i can help..i sure will.....

blessings,
Z

It is not considered correct by the Community Guidelines to solicit pen pals here. However, you can click on any person's name/avatar, and see if they have a 360 page, or if they are allowing emails. I have a 360 page and allow emails, although I don't always answer them.

Be aware that not all Americans speak English all that well. Some are just lazy about it, possibly from using too much instant messaging. They go 2 x-tremes w/abbreviations, u no?

For real practice, you need to visit the places where English and American (and New Zealander) tourists go, and talk to people. Written language and spoken language are two different things, and it's the spoken you need to get the nuances.

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

I am also a non native English speaker, and i am also teaching english now. But then, i am practicing the language since i was a kid and i am doing well though i did not visit any english speaking country to enhance my english speaking skill. Watch english films and always practice the language even if you are talking to a fellow Japanese.

A year is not long enough to gain a good mastery of the language. You must practice with native speakers often and learn the slang along with proper English. Congratulations on learning English, it's not easy if you aren't a native speaker.

Read the English language newspapers. Your English is good enough now that you could read arbitrary books in English also; pick a subject and go for it.
