He made the Queen of Spain happy enough that she was willing to fund his exploration trip to find a western route to the Far East(Asia) and Africa. It was an effort to find a faster route there.
What he found was the island of Guanahini which he renamed San Salvado. Even though there were native people living there he "claimed it for Spain"
Now do you want to know about the illness and death he and the crew accidently brought to the native people on the island?

He was one of the first people to venture out and discover, and his voyage is credited for discovering the continent of the Americas (even though at first he only made to I think it was Cuba)!! He was convinced that this was India, and that he had found a northwest passage to India from Spain- Spain wanted to participate in the Indian Ocean trade but didnt want to go all the way around Africa so Ferdinand and Isabella agreed to fund this expedition, even though he was really Portuguese. Only until after his death, when Amerigo Vespucci mapped out the continent was it certain that this was not India.

Basically, brought spain to the Americas. But did he really discover the continent when the indians already inhabited it? And if when he died, he had still thought he had reached Aisa?

Huh? Your question doesnt make sense. The sailers would only fall of if the international became FLAT. The round earth theory became shown already. so as that they knew the earth became round yet because it really is round, they wont fall of, no longer any opposite direction round.
