This ain't for me, it's for my 20 year old son. He didn't ask me to do this but I'm doing it anyway.

One of his good friends is throwing a party. My son's quite the party animal and can throw a good party (get's that from me), as can most of his friends. This friend that I have referenc to isn't very good at throwing parties. My son went to his last one only to be bored witless because he said the music wasn't up to par with partying status. My son was asked to attend his next party and told his friend he'd think about, meaning "I'll try to think of a way to say HELL NO as nice as possible and when I find it, I'll get back to you".

I say there's no way to say it nicely. He should just say it, tell him why, and be done with it. You agree with me or not?

Just so you know, That's the way they talk to each other. In their eyes "Hell no" isn't being rude. I beg to differ with that.

Though he does not need to be rude, he should be honest, of course leaving out the details. He can just say that he is just not up to it. It leaves it vague enough so he does not feel like he is lying to his friend, cause technically he is not...
If he is that good of a friend...he can just make an appearance and then leave...it's his call! Maybe the 2nd time around won't be as bad...

As the saying goes, "You can't be all things to all people all the time." So why is "no" an underused word in your vocabulary? A little assertiveness goes a long way.

What Makes a Good "No"?

It is stated firmly, so it is not misinterpreted.
It doesn't necessarily require a lot of explanation.
Two more points:
You can say no to one request, but offer to do something else instead if you wish.
Also, if saying no up front makes you uneasy, you can buy some time to ponder your decision by saying, "Let me think about it but do not count on me."
Saying thank you for invitation but I do not intend to come, would be polite and firm.

Well if your son's 20 he should know about excuses. Just lie to the boy and say he has other plans.

Or tell your son to go to the party and liven it up for his friend.

a nice way to handle this is to offer to help with the party and then if the friend says no then just tell them since they want to act like that then you wont be there

No I dont agree, thats rude. Because the two of them have different styles, dosent call for jerkness. Your son can make up any line to get out of it,:im sick",whatever.

Maybe tell your son to offer to help make the party an absolute smash!

Or just say, "When was the party..." "oh...im sorry can't be there_____ reason"

"Hell No" isn't nice, it's rude...but one can say "no" in a polite way that's simply turning down an offer...all he has to do is tell his friend he'd rather not attend...if questioned, then he should be honest and say it's just not his cup o' tea...

I totally agree with you, be honest and simply say no, if this person is any kind of friend, he will understand. Good Luck!
