I really wish people would be more descriptive in their questions. This is sooo broad. Software is written to run on a particular OS (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc...) Some software has a Mac and Windows version and so on.
So when you say "what kind of program" there's not really any "kind" that isn't compatible. It's just that if the program doesn't say it will run on the Mac, then it won't. Just like if it doesn't say it will run on Windows, then it won't.
When you're buying the software, it will say what it runs on when you look at the box or the item description online. Look for "System Requirements" - as it may be one that runs on both.

Any program can run on the Mac, with little or no effort. If it's a Windows only program, you can run BootCamp and dual boot with Windows to maintain compatibility. Windows Media will play on a Mac, with Filp4Mac, which is a free plug-in for QuickTime. Internet Explorer? Who needs it, Safari is much better anyways. Look at it this way, if there's a PC program that doesn't work on Mac OS X, chances are there is a BETTER alternative for Mac OS X.

Any program that says Windows is not compatible with the MacOS. If you have an intel mac and have installed Windows on it, then you might be able to run it.
Linux programs often but not always can be run on a mac with some extra work.
