No electricity, baking from scratch, no telephone, sometimes they may have a community phone in the middle of their community, working everything by hand, garden, cows for milk, making clothes. hanging wet clothes outside to dry, washing by hand, just imagine, they live a very simple life without the modern conveniences that we as a society take for granted. they do not drive a car, they have horse drawn buggies, they are educated up to the eighth grade. They live on farms, some own stores, bakery's, restaurants that service the area and people come and tour Amish country all of the time. They live with others on an honor system, for instance here in rural Ohio where I live there is a large Amish community, and out on the highway (country) there is a stand in the middle of no where, they daily place home baked pies and cookies and wonderful tasty bakery items on display and they are there to be sold. No one mans it, it is an honor system, you leave your money and take your product. They are a very loving and trusting people. They do not allow photographs, however, I think in light of the tragedy some of them allowed it for the news recently. They are very well know for the furniture and homes that they build of very good quality. They are very wholesome people. Very God fearing people. Hope this gave you an idea.

While I first thought this question to be rather silly (a real Amish person wouldn't be using a computer!) I recall the fact that Amish youth are permitted to sample "the outside world" for a period of time, and some actually decide to stay there with the rest of us- I hope someone who has experienced both lives will answer, it would be most intriguing.

I really don't think an Amish woman is going to be on Yahoo to answer you. And Amish women would be the only ones who could honestly answer this question.

They cook and clean and serve the men. The only thing I do know is, when they become of age, they are allowed in the "real world" for a while and they can decide which life they want. If they choose to be on the outside, they are shunned from their families.

I thank God every day i am not amish: no electricity, no cars, no birth control, lots of hard work, church and limitations everywhere.

Plain and simple....you cook and clean and take care of the kids. You're very religious. You have no entertainment....TV, computers, radio, etc or indoor plumbing.
