I think they're both full of $hit.
The pope was quoting someone else,
The muslims weren't listening when he apoligized,
So they went as crazy as the quotes predicted.
******* CRAZY!

The pope is just a man.
Learned, perhaps, in history.
He has "people" who draft his speeches, etc.
He is correct that Muslims kill for honor and are more than willing to be martyrs and die for their beliefs.
Ninety percent of all killings in the entire world have been done by Muslims. And it is still going on. They want to destroy Israel...then you are next.

According to what I heard, the Pope was expressing the concept that conversion by the sword was less than desirable. Perhaps how he explained this concept was less than effective, but his intention seems to have been in the right place. (Even if he does resemble Darth Sidious in Star Wars).

the more fundamental "versus" would be reason versus religion. any religion. period.
To observe the current fashion of Christianity being branded as synonymous with Western Civilization, the Age of Enlightenment, and Reason is quite surreal. When contrasted with radical Islam, even Scientology looks prudent.
Nevermind one of the catalysts for ushering in the Enlightenment in Europe was the rejection of the Christian god in view of the magnitude of death caused by the 1755 Portuguese tsunami.

i think it's pretty funny. it basically goes like this:
pope: "islam is a violent religion"
muslim fanatics: "WHAT? HOW DARE YOU? WE WILL KILL YOU!!!"
I mean, c'mon, you can't make this stuff up!
