I play the guitar as well...here are some real easy songs to learn, that sound great, are easy to play, and peeps will want to listen to:

"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" by: Poison
"Wonderful Tonight" by: Eric Clapton
"Simple Man" by: Lynard Skynard
"I Remember You" by: Skid Row
"Take It On the Run" by: REO Speedwagon
"What You Give" by: Tesla
"Patience" by: Guns 'n Roses
"Heaven" by: Warrant
"Angie" by: Rolling Stones
"Wild Horses" by: Rolling Stones
"Peaceful Easy Feeling" by: The Eagles
"Down By The River" by: Neil Young

I could go on and on forever buddy. Each of the above songs can be played with chords, little to no picking...everyone, no matter what kind of music is your favorite knows those songs. They are easy to play. You can grab the chord tabs off the net and work them till you get it right real easily.

Good Luck

If you're going to play Stairway to Heaven...Don't. Too many people play just the intro and they play it wrong...Just don't. Rape Me by Nirvana sounds good acoustic. You could also play Good Riddance or anything off of Warning by Green Day. Good luck.
