Beneftis are that it is a quick way to check on the presence of an ion without extensive separation procedures or precipitations, etc.

Drawback is that not all elements can be detected this way, and some elements (notably sodium) can mask the presence of others.

No. some steel ions make a contribution very strongly to the colour of the flame, while others make a contribution little or no. working example, the lilac of ok+ can't be seen while Na+ is present, because of the mind-blowing yellow coloration produced by a compound containing Na+ (until eventually you leaf by using blue glass.)
