Most legends and old wives tales have at least some basis in fact, but over time and retelling change into something unreal. I see someone mentioned Dracula who is based on Vlad III of Walachia, also known as Vlad The Impaler. And there is also reason to believe that some elements of vampire legends come from rare illnesses that we now recognize, such as one ailment where a person is basically allergic to the sun,not that I can ever remember what it's called. But it's a very real illness and one can see how it could end up reshaping itself into myth over time among people with much less understanding of science than common man. So to a point I do believe in old wives tales/myths it's just a matter of figuring out what they originally were meant to convey. By the way just for the record regardless of the way he earned his name Vlad would in reality go down as a hero of the highest order for defending his people with little or no regard for his own life, and with great courage, just shows you how things can reshape themselves over a couple hundred years. He was a brutal man but he saved his people from destruction by being so.

Some old wives tales have been proved by science. For example, chicken soup does help if you have a cold, and fiber does help you digest, and fish =brain food.
