OH- I so hope so! Wouldn't that be nice---I always tell my kids- just"BE A HUMAN! BE RESPECTFUL! and guess what- I am to them and they are! Think of it as a "Pass it on" thing, or do unto others. I think it is....You are teaching by example in fact-right?! Good luck on your essay---

Unfortunately, I don't think so. I would have said yes if this was 10-12 years ago, however, as I have gotten older and become more entrenched in professional life, I have run into many people that lead me to believe that some people are just plain @$$holes. I have a client that is so rude and condescending that it is intolerable. I hang up the phone and slam it down 5 or 6 times before I feel better. I am always respectful toward her (she is my client, I have to be), but if respect were contagious, wouldn't she eventually treat me the same way I treat her? She doesn't...she doesn't because she can't. It's that simple.
Some people are just wired to be rude, self centered, egotistical, condescending unprofessional, and uncaring. Those are the people with whom you do not surround yourself. This is b/c you end up expending all of this effort and energy trying to be nice to them only to have them continue to mistreat you. "If you are constantly being mistreated, then you are agreeing to the mistreatment".
Even yawns aren't contagious...it has been found that only people who are empathetic seem to do the empathy/contagious yawn.
Respect? Contagious? No way - I would even say that respect is nearly becoming obsolete.

Respect is not contagious. But it has sure reciprocation, mostly better than what went out. Of all the human emotions, respect is the only one which man has innovated. Others are primary crude emotions
It is modified from fear of the stronger other,which you will find in the animals.When in doubt, they fight it out and determine who is stronger and mostly accept the outcome as final.
Man, benefiting from his accumulation of experiences ..called memory.. anticipated the outcome of fights and decided to accept the outcome as final. This reduced the occasions for fights.
Further modifying his behavior on the same lines, he anticipated that advance acceptance of the superiority of the other brought about better inter-personal relationship. This happened mostly between husband and wife and between parent and child. Later the trend was extended to all authority figures such as Clan Head, Tribal Chief , etc, and finally to the King {Government}

I believe respect is contagious because when someone is respectful to you, you in turn are respectful to them.

Wow, it would be great if so. And then maybe kindness could be contagious...and decency...and a sense of responsibility...
maybe one could lead to the other.
