why are the inner transition metals located below the periodic table?

i just asked myself right now that question while i was looking at the periodic table.

If they weren't, the main portion of the table would have 32 columns instead of 18. And despite the fact that their electron configurations are different due to the number of f electrons, their chemistries do not differ as greatly because of this as occurs with either the main group or the transition series.
