Probably for the same reason that corporations are able to get Americans to buy just about any kind of product. There are people in companies who spend all day every day doing nothing but thinking up and implementing ways into which to deceive people into buying products that they do not need and can not afford. Thus, our country is a society based on a credit. (Eventually the whole economic system will collapse).
Similarly, people are so persuaded by political advertisements. They are suckered into focusing on what the candidate or others are saying in commercials, when the real question they should be asking themselves is, "What am I NOT being told in this advertisement?".

I don't. Often, if I don't like the selection of candidates much at all, I vote for the one with the least advertising, or one I've never heard of, just to put my 2-cents in.

People tend to be sheep and most are persuaded by advertising and propaganda. People who think with their hearts are attracted to the liberal agenda, and people who are logical tend to be attracted to the conservative agenda. For those that don't fit into that definition, here is another, "A liberal is a conservative, who has not been mugged yet".
