The Commanche Indians were one of the the Great Plains Indians. They operated from Northern Mexico, up as far north as western Kansas. As far east as east Texas, and as far west as the Rockies. They battled with Navajo, Ute, Soiux, and most frequently the Apache. These tribes bounded or overlapped their territory. Present day central and west Texas was the center of their territory.

South Texas. This was the Indian Nation portrayed in the book, "Dances with Wolves," with a mention of Chief Ten Bears having found a Consquistador's helmet.

The movie, however, featured the Lakota (Sioux) because the plains of South Texas do not have sufficient bison (buffalo) herds for the film. The film makers produced the film in the Dakotas.

Among the most famous Comanche chiefs was Quanah Parker, born of a Comanche warrior and a white woman, Cynthia Parker. His is a story that begs to be read.

Other tribes occupying the southern reaches of Texas were the Mescalaro Apache and the Jicarilla Apache.
