Communication is possible because of space based satellites. Space exploration helps develop technology for other purposes on earth. To conserve terran resources, we may have to go to other planets / asteroids for needed metals. To accomodate our expanding population, we may need to live "out there". To answer the ancient question - "Are we alone?"

Currently, because we don't have a good way to get off the the Earth, it's only use is for various Earth orbiting satellites, like weather satellites. In the future, it will be integrated into our economy, like the formerly uncharted territory on Earth is now. Only there is a lot more space than there ever was uncharted territory on Earth. A lot more.

One of the straight forward prizes would be the heavy metals in large near earth objects(NEOs) which often are in greater percentages than in earth's crust. As the hot earth formed in times past, much of the heavy elements, compounds & metals sank to the center of the earth, leaving the earth's accessible crust relatively barren in heavy elements. However, mining for these NEO elements in space might not be economic. Better economics may be available if we can nudge NEOs into controlled deorbits which would land in the oceans. This scenario will open many avenues of scientific investigation tho, if we are to avoid NEOs pollutions, earth impacts & major tsunamis generated by the tremendous water impacts that we already fear from larger & faster moving uncontrolled deorbiting NEOs,. If we can find such great scientific solutions to the problems of NEO's pollutions & impacts, the riches afforded to all the countries of earth can drag the third & fourth world countries out of their poverty, if all nations approve equitable distributions of wealth. We have precedent for such a future when we set Antarctica aside from exploitation by only the richest of nations. U.S. space policy on paper supports such a future for the riches of space. We may find out how strong is U.S. policy for this future, if we discover a NEO with few pollutions & rich metals that can be economically deorbited. The richest nations, if allowed may scrape NEOs wealth into their own pockets. Severe challenges are ahead. But solutions are possible with equally severe hard work. There is a possible bright future for ALL earth's nations. Let us set our sails to catch the winds of space wealth properly...for the salvation of earth's poorest nations.

Space is a good idea because it keeps nasties like supernovae, black holes, white dwarfs, red giants, neutron stars, magnetars and X-ray galaxies well away. If it didnt exist the Universe would not exist and neither would we.

The outer space is really "NOTHING" .THE "VOID' THE EMPTINESS. But without it nothing in this universe could evr exist. But it requires nothing to exist in. is it not funny ? But that is the reality and the speciality about it .
no only the outer space . you yourself is existing because of the space only . you ar moving only because of space only.
Now consider this situation;
You have two vessels . One is of one liter capacity . another is of thre liter capacity. now you have the one litre vessel filled with milk to the brim. you have to take two liter milk in one one single vessel . you can not have ther tree liter vessel. Can you pour one more litre of milk in the vessel of one litere capacity that is already full with milk to the brim? no . Why? you have now space in it . Now you can not take the threee liter vessel. that vesselis emmpty . it has space for threee lires of milk . now I have no objection to your taking one litre of space from that bvessel if you want and if you can. Can you transfer the space ofone liter volume from the three liter vessel to the one liter vessel. ?o .Why ? you have threeliter space in it . The space is available . if it is available why not take it ? is it something to be available ? You would say it is available . isn't it ? But it can not be tken . It can not ber moved . it can not be cut away.It is nothing . but it is available . a nothing is available . should not a thnig be some thing to be availlable ? how can a thing that is nothing be available ? Space alone is the oinly thing that is nothing but a still a thing . a thing of nothing. But without it 'no thing in the universe and in the world will have existence.Suppose you are standing inside a room . the air has some thousand cubic foot of volume . assume that you r boduy has a volume of ten cubic feet . The air iniside the room is occupying 990 cubic foot and you occupy 10 cft of space . Suppose that he ten cft of space is not availalble inside the room . Wand you can not get out of the room . What will happen? just because the rrom is occupied by the air , it can be compressed to some extent to accomodate yu . suppose the room is filled to the ceiling with some bundles of hard substances to the extent of 1000 cft and yu are required to be inside the room only and yo have no space out side to be . what will happen? you have no other space to exist even.So everything in this universe , requires an empty space to the minimu of its most compressible volume to exist even . If that is notavailable , nothing in this world and universe can have any existence at all. The outer space is such a thing of "NOTHING ' A NO THING - BUT still a THING .of nothing . eveything else requires it to exist in and live in and move in. Thinms can not move at all if the space is nt available . If that nothing is not present ( stange that nothing should be present ! ) , things can not move and things can not exist as separate things . for things to exist even as one solid thing the space equivalent to its most minimu compressible volunme of emptiness is required . So everything is existing always in nothing - in space only . Nothing therefore, can exist even for a fraction of the zillionth part of a moment without the space - the "nothing".
eveythin g has has a shape and everyhting hat has a shape has has limits circumscribing its boundaries around its shape ans even gas has some shapoe and limit that describes its bounds . But space being emprty - void - nothing can have no boundaries and it is nothing . Some thing that is nothing can never have a boundary. to have some boundary a thing shouild be a thing . When spaceis "NOTHING ' how can it have a boundary/ tha tis onlt space is boudless and immeasureable . Some thinhg that does not have a boundary can not be measured . to measure anything you need its boundary. Space being something that is nothing , water can not wet it , fire can not burn it . no wind or explosion mpove it and no cold will affect it . It has no depth of height and no directioin , no beginning and no middle and no end and no directions as it is nothing . ho can something that is "NOTHING ' CAN HAVE ANY QUALITIES AT ALL?
Every thing exists in it and it does not require anything to exist in as it is nothing . It is not divisible ; but things stand divided in it . it ]does not move at all ; butr thngs need it to move. Theings need it to grow and things need it to move. The galaxies are able to move withtremendous speed indefinitely with ewnormous space in between them and thougfh are in a state of free fall are not falling any where and and have not hitting any end and boundary , because space is nothing - that gives it the specail character of infinity and absoluteness .it alone has a singularity that notheing else in this universe has . but for it the entire universe and all the galalctic matters visible and invisible , all rays and cosmic waves and energies would not have had any existence . Then what we are and where would we have been ? The very existence of all things in the entire universe depends on the empty space - the void -that is the God which pervades everything and on which every thing is woven like pearls in a web.
What more use do you require for man kind and what else would be more useful for not only man kind but for every thing from Grass to the Galaxies ?
" know this is the womb;
of all creatures ,
i am the source of all the universe
just as i am its dissolution'
"Nothing is higher than I am ,
Arjuna , all that exists
is woven on me
like a web of pearls on thread"
The whole universe is pervaded
by my unmanifest form
all creatures exist in me ,
but i do not exist in them"
"nature with me as her inner eye ,
bears animate and inanimate beings
and by reason of this , Arjuna ,
the universe contnues to turn"
"I shall teach you what is to be known,
for knowing it , one attains immortality ,
it is called the supreme spirit
beginningles , neither being nor non-being"
