In the Third Age of Middle Earth. This time period didn't actually exist on this earth; Tolkien just made it up for his story. The book is fiction, you know.

The time period for The Lord of the Rings is based on your imagination. You can place the time period in any time frame you want. Even though I never open the books, I loved the movies. With that in mind, pick a time!

According to Wikipedia...
The action in The Lord of the Rings is set in what the author conceived to be the lands of the real Earth, inhabited by humanity but placed in a fictional past, before our history but after the fall of his version of Atlantis, which he calls Númenor.[

That style of time is commonly referred to as “Sword and Sorcery”. It is when wizards walked the earth, along with kings, barbarians, and other fantasy mainstays. Sometimes, dinosaurs are along for the ride, other times it’s more realistic, as in Martin’s “Song of Ice and Fire” books. All in all, the time period has no correlation to any real point in history.
