On passing plays, run his route, beat his opponent, get open and catch the ball and at times he must come back to help out his QB when hes in trouble. On running plays, block his assigned man or what's best for the play. They are not meant to be leaders because that is the QBs job, but should fire the team up.

there are many jobs of a receiver including blocking on running plays, making clutch catches, running crisp routes, firing up the rest of the offense.
