The poorest person possible. A story to help you appreciate what you have. Like "the diary of anne frank" or "grapes of wrath".. but much worse.

This one's an oldie, but it's about a really poor kid, an orphan, working as a newspaper boy on the streets of New York in the 1930s. He takes on the care of a severely handicapped little girl who was being abused. It's a struggle for him to earn enough to feed her.
Michael O'Halloran by Gene Stratton Porter
Probably your public library would have it or could get it for you.

Helen Forrester wrote "Twopence to Cross the Mersey" as well as "Minerva’s Stepchild” (published in British paperback as “Liverpool Miss”), “By the Waters of Liverpool”, and “Lime Street at Two” to document her life growing up in Liverpool after her father lost his job in the 1930's. The family was very poor. I read the books several years ago and I still remember some of the painful bits in it. It is definitely a good lot of books if you want to put your life into perspective.

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt. It was a very depressing movie, but suprisingly the book is a little more upbeat despite the family's abject poverty.
