What are the general uses of upload and download?

I'm trying to find out if paying $10 more per month is worth it for 10 mpbs more upload. The download is the same regardless 2 mb. Like I want to know like yahoo searches take download but IM take upload. Just want to know the how I use each.

Upload means puting something like on a website or something and downloading is saving it in a computer......

hey 10 mpbs is good stick with that or you can go up even better if you wish to 10gb
