my guess would be plasma

There is a lot of matter in various states inside stars...
Some is hydrogen in gaseous form (also helium, lithium, oxygen and a bunch of other elements). Some of the hydrogen is undergoing nuclear fusion, combining two hydrogen atoms to make helium. Some of the elements exist as ionized plasma. Depending on the age of the star, there may also be heavy elements that either arose from fusion of other elements or are themselves undergoing fusion as part of the carbon cycle.

Oh, and all you people who said plasma can't exist on earth -- not so. We make plasmas in laboratories all the time. NASA even has a plasma engine for space vehicles :)

Technically, there are gasses in all of those, but the answer your looking for is probably plasma. Plasma is a special state of matter that only exists in extreme temperatures that con not be obtained on the Earth.
