you need a checking account so you can make your credit card payments.
Credit cards are a financial tool which provide convenience. If you don't have any problem paying in cash then don't get a credit card.
Credit cards are NOT for managing debt. The interest rates are outragious. Always pay your bill in full each month. Never buy something you cannot afford to pay off that month.

The single most important factor in getting credit cards is proof of a good source of income. Prove you have a job that leaves you disposable income, and you can get a card even with a fairly meager bank account. I know the cliche is "they only give you credit when you don't need it." And to an extent, this is true. But in fact, once you have proof of decent income, the credit card offers will start rolling in, and you will find that banks and credit card companies will be only too glad to give you so much credit, you will never be able to get out from under the debt you incur taking them up on their offers.
The better your income, the better risk you are for the credit card company or bank, and so 1) the more credit they will extend you at the inception of the card (it will automatically increase over time) and 2) the lower the interest on your card wil be. Excellent credit will get you an interest rate anywhere from 5%-9% on a new card; less good credit may get you a 12%-20% interest rate. Over time, if you do not keep the card caught up and paid off, this higher interest card can crush you with huge debt.
Good luck.

You cannot get a credit card without a bank account. They want to see some kind of "history" on you as well.

Just say no if it ask you for a checking account.
I used to pay my credit card by money order until I decided to get checking account and used the credit card website to pay my bill.
I don't trust payment centers anymore.
In the U.S. you don't need a checking account to get a credit card.

You can't get a bank credit card without money in the bank. What you can get is a charge card on some stores - they issue them, or you can get a Bankcard, which allows you to charge items up to a certain amount. These have to be paid back monthly.

Your only option really would be a secured card, which normally requires a $200-$300 security deposit.
