the noise only occurs once or twice a week and i have only heard it inside the car

You may have a broken transmission mount, this will cause the transmission to jump when it (or you) shifts. when it jumps it will hit the underside of the floor. I had a 94 camaro with the same problem...

This will difficult tryin gto help you. I needmore info. Was the engine warm or cold? Full tank of fuel or low? Last tune up? How does it run overall? Give as much info as you can when you ask a question like this.

Not much information...when driving, when idling, what? Can't help much without more info. Standard, auto, v-6, v-8...what?
