It's called a soft drink as opposed to either beer or higher proof alcoholo, this from the nineteenth century where drinking was quite common and definitely part of the meal carried over from western Europe. It's been conjectured it was custom because the sewers and water system were so old and bad, they drank wine instead. If any of the ladies in my family are correct, somebody who drinks has a wealth of reasons. So I'll go with that. A soft drink is one that has no after effects, with the exception of Coca Cola which, when first introduced had a percentage of actual content from the Coca leaf. Yes, from where they make Cocaine. I think at the very tail end of the nineteenth century, with the slogan; ' The pause that refreshes. ' ( Open to correction. ) With that content, I can't see how you could help being anything other than lively. Too, at the time, Laudnum was generally prescribed for incurables. It was a wild and wacky century, to be sure. All soda really is, is colored water with a sugar content. Velazquez most famous painting, is called the water seller. No fizz. Just some flavoring. All organic and vaguely healthy. The idea was to cool the thirst, not put you onstage at the Escorial. Hope this helps.

Its a completely regional thing, depending on where you live depends on what word you use.

I am from South Alabama and people call everything a coke, regardless of what type of soda it is.

My dad is from Massachusetts and says soda, so I inherited that phrase from him.

This is my theory, and it has held up over the years, after meeting all kinds of new people from different places.

I am thinking that you are not from the south, for sure :) right? (if you are my theory is crap)

Here is my theory. It has to do with the water that is used in processing the beverage. Carbonation IE. soda in the water makes the water softer. Hence the name.

Because heavy alcoholic drinks are called "hard drinks" and since soft drinks don't have anything in it like that it would be "soft drinks".
